Heartland Dental is a dynamic, entrepreneurial organization.  We follow a distributed Information Systems model, where decision making is diffused across the enterprise.  In this model, business functions serve as the product owner, empowered to make technology decisions based on their business objectives.  The Business Systems Analyst supports this model by ensuring business needs and processes are understood and documented into functional requirements to be used by technical teams to design innovative and high-quality technical solutions that will deliver value to the business.    


The Business Systems Analyst is a new role, reporting to the Senior Director, IT Business Management.  In your role as Business Systems Analyst, you will be expected to bring your experience and passion for business systems analysis, along with your guidance and support for establishing this new capability within the framework of our IT Business Management team, which currently consists of business engagement and project management.    Working with IT Business Partners, Project Managers, and other IT leaders, you’ll contribute to the creation of standard methods and processes for business systems analysis that will support scalability and advance the maturity of our demand management, project management, and application development functions. 

In the Business Systems Analyst role, you will work closely with business leaders and their teams to identify, define, and document business processes that drive requirements for software.  You will play a visible role as liaison between business and IT teams by facilitating communication and determining software objectives that align with stated and unstated business needs. 


The successful candidate will have a proven track record of business system analysis experience supporting a broad range of initiatives and engaging with diverse business leaders and users to understand and articulate the business requirements for projects using agile, waterfall and hybrid methodologies.

As a Business Systems Analyst, your primary responsibilities are to:  

  • Continuously listen, ask questions, and learn about business units and their processes to build broad organizational knowledge and relationships that will enable successful navigation within the organization.
  • Create business systems analysis plans that are appropriate in approach and scale for assigned initiatives. This includes stakeholder analysis, risk analysis for requirements, and time estimates for business analysis activities. 
  • Use a variety of techniques to elicit business requirements, such as interviews, workshops, shadowing, observation, surveys, etc.
  • Document current processes and models to inform requirements and understand inefficiencies or gaps.
  • Conduct meetings and presentations with business stakeholders to ensure understanding of requirements, obtain clarification and further refine requirements.
  • Translate conceptual user requirements into clear, detailed functional requirements that are approved by business and used by development teams to create technical design documents.
  • Work with business and IT delivery teams to prioritize requirements and manage requirements scoping throughout the delivery process.
  • Define and execute test cases to ensure delivery team outputs meet requirements.
  • Support agile projects by writing user stories, backlog refinement, product demos and assisting stakeholders with UAT activities.   
  • Help build and continuously improve Heartland’s agile processes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 5 years experience in business systems analysis with experience working in agile, waterfall and hybrid methodologies
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Visio
  • Highly developed communication skills (written, verbal, presentation) with ability and comfort to work with all levels of the organization, including executive level leaders
  • Experience partnering with both business and technical stakeholders
  • Strong analytical skills to critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources 
  • Able to quickly learn the objectives, structures, operations, and policies of a new business area
  • Superior time management and project management skills, including the ability to plan and execute commitments according to a defined schedule
  • Skills and experience with negotiating conflict and problem-solving to achieve win-win outcomes; ability to manage stakeholder expectations 
  • Able to lead and energize change using positive and collaborative methods 
  • Able to lead requirements elicitation workshops 
  • Able to focus on business outcomes and value results, rather than technical solutions 
  • Must have and maintain credibility with the business function team and leaders 
  • Must demonstrate acumen in business and functional disciplines 
  • Understand and integrate business strategies and trends in technology to deliver value 
  • Be able to influence others, using personal rather than positional power 
  • Accepts ownership and keeps commitments  

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other business field, or equivalent experience; MBA is desirable 
  • Business systems analysis experience in healthcare industry
  • Design Thinking experience
  • Business processing modeling experience
  • Experience with conducting and creating cost/benefit analyses and business cases

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer   
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times   
  • Ability to travel to Heartland Dental Supported Offices and our partners for meetings as required
